Music Magazine Cover Research

This is the XXL hip hop magazine. They have used a black background with other contrasting colours for the writing, such as a strong white and mild red colours, but they haven't used lots and lots of different colours to make the magazine look professional and not like any random person has created it. The picture used of Drake and Nicki Minaj who are currently in-demand hip hop artists and they are posed in a manor which will make the audience think they are "cool" and to be idolised. In the picture, they have also got no imperfections, which is probably the work of photo shop to make them look perfect and to have the full impact of reeling in the audience to buy the magazine. Also, I've noticed there is a slight low angle camera angle of this photo, which can emulate their current status in the hip hop world with them being in-demand and currently dominating sales and topping the music charts. Another factor is the main cover line is in a big font, it is bold and it stands out from everything, and will clearly catch the eye of the audience.
The image of the Nicki Minaj and Drake overlaps title, which shows magazine is already well known and not in your face as it doesn't require to be, hence it promotes the celebrities being shown on the cover more than the actual name of the magazine. Also, the celebrities are positioned directly in the middle of the magazine to further raise awareness of them, as the magazine is already known and doesn't require the name of the magazine to be further promoted, hence the magazine is using the celebrities as a prop to sell their magazine rather than relying on their own brand name.

This is the Rap up music magazine, which is a magazine which represents hip hop artists and rappers. This edition features hip hop female artist Ciara, also known for her work in R&B. The picture of her is positioned right in the middle of the cover which means it is the most important feature on the page according to the rule of thirds, and it is a large picture which is overlapping the title and has no writing overlapping the picture, further proving that this image is the most important thing in view. Therefore the effect upon the audience looking at the cover will be to focus of the picture, and the sexual appeal in this photo will more so appeal to men and this is stereotypically the type of audience who would go out and buy a music magazine, especially hip hop as it is a more hardcore magazine, compared to an eloquent type of music stereotypically associated with women, such as soft music like artists such as Taylor Swift and Michael Buble.
The pink background is a soft and feminine colour which will attract the attentions of women, as pink is a traditional colour associated with women and hence why they will use this colour to sell to the female audience.

This is the music magazine 'The Source' and on the cover is worldwide known hip hop artist and rapper Lil' Wayne. Since this magazine isn't a very well known magazine they have had to use a well known face to promote the magazine, and something I've known which proves that the magazine isn't a very well known magazine is that the masthead overlaps the picture of Lil' Wayne, however it has been adapted well as the use of a white masthead of a red background of Lil' Wayne's hat, and the masthead therefore stands out and will promote the magazine logo and name more effectively, and raising awareness of the magazine is also vital so that they can attract big stars for interviews and the main focus, the sell more magazines. There is a good colour scheme focus with reds being used in the picture of Lil' Wayne, and also on the area surrounding cover lines, and it helps to further outline the cover lines and masthead as the writing is white and black which clearly stands out and hence will attract the attentions of the audience. The image of Lil' Wayne is a close up, and he is directly in the centre of the front cover, so in terms of the rule of thirds he is the most important thing on the cover as well as there is a shallow depth of field and therefore further evidencing that the image is a key point on the cover. The main cover line is also about Lil' Wayne, so the image encourages the reader to read the cover line regarding him and to further read on to the article about him. Also, the use of famous names of music artists further promotes the magazine. The sell line on this cover is "The bible of hip-hop music, culture & politics" is well used in this instance, as it is placed just below the title so therefore it will probably be noticed by the audience, also the black background surrounding the white bold writing also creates the effect where the sell line stands out from the background and catch the eye of the reader.

This is the front cover of the music magazine "Vibe" with Keri Hilson on the cover. The colour scheme is a mix of various shades of blue, and red and white. The soft blue background helps outline her dark blue outfit to the audience, and the outfit itself has sexual appeal and will draw in men in particular and Keri Hilson fans. According to the rule of thirds, Keri is placed directly in the middle of cover which further emphasizes her image, as well as the image itself, I believe it has been more defined and catches all the attention immediately. The colour scheme for the writing is in reds and white colours, which the red is a colour of a vibrant colour which further catches the readers eye and it contrasts the blue background, as does the white writing as it is a complete contrast of blue, inparticular the dark and mild blues on this cover. The image also covers the "Vibe" masthead which shows the magazine is already an established magazine and doesn't require to sell the logo and brand name any further, as people already recognise it at a glance. Therefore, they use the factor of using the famous celebrity to promote the magazine and use the masthead as a back up.

This is the front cover for the music magazine "XXL" with Kanye West on the cover as the main image.
The white background helps a dark black image stand out, and also there is a black and white filter that has been used to take the photo which creates an element of importance and definitely a characteristic of "old school", which could be saying Kanye is a classic rapper and music artist. The contrast in colour catches the eye, but also the whole magazine cover is just about the picture, there is one cover line which is about Kanye, and this shows the importance of Kanye, and the one cover line, large centred image and nothing else being on the cover, and on the cover it also says it is a "special collector's issue", which indicates it is a vitally important magazine and the article about the artist is very important. Therefore, this special edition, combined with the large image and one main cover lines, means that this cover will excite the audience who see the cover and encourage them to purchase the magazine. The colour scheme is of black, white and red, which is almost like a negative colour camera lens, which makes the whole cover look like it is in black and white lens and then the red stands out as the one spectrum colour and helps to outline the masthead as important, and promotes the magazine name to the audience.
